New York: Why Every Trip Feels Like the First Time
Twelve visits. Same number as Dubai, completely different energy, completely different relationship. Dubai feels like a place I go to exhale. New York feels like a place that grabs me by the shoulders and reminds me that the world is enormous and chaotic and full of things I have not seen yet. I love both for entirely different reasons and I would not choose between them if you paid me.
New York is the only city I have been to more than once where I have had a genuinely different experience every single time. The city refuses to repeat itself. Every trip has its own personality, its own moments, its own version of the chaos that makes New York feel like nowhere else on earth. After twelve visits I still land at JFK with something that feels embarrassingly close to excitement and I am not even slightly sorry about it.
Why New York Works for Every Budget
One of the things I love most about New York is that it genuinely caters to everyone. My first stop every single time I land in New York is Los Tacos Number One. They have a few locations across the city and I have been to Mexico, I know what a good taco should taste like, and these are brilliant. It has become a ritual at this point. Land, drop bags, Los Tacos Number One. Only then does the trip officially begin.
The Walkability
New York is one of the most walkable cities I have ever visited and after spending so much time in Dubai where everything requires a taxi, this feels like a genuine luxury. You can walk from neighbourhood to neighbourhood and each one feels like a completely different world. The city reveals itself on foot in a way that it simply does not from a taxi window or a subway car. Walk as much as you physically can.
The Energy
The city is chaotic in a way that is almost theatrical. You cannot walk five minutes without seeing something completely unexpected. The energy is relentless and instead of finding it exhausting I find it exhilarating, which probably tells you something about my personality.
The Honest Safety Note
Over the years and across my twelve visits I have noticed a change in how safe New York feels, particularly at night and in certain areas. It is still a city I love and will keep returning to, but if I were visiting solo now I would be more thoughtful about where I go after dark and more aware of my surroundings than I might have been on my earlier trips. Travel smart, stay in well lit and busy areas at night, and trust your instincts.
The Weekend Trip Reality
From London you can genuinely do New York in a long weekend and have a full experience. The flight is around seven hours, the time difference is five hours behind, and if you plan well you can fit an enormous amount into a short trip. I have done it multiple times and come back feeling like I had a proper holiday rather than a quick dash.
