How to Find Reward Flights Without Losing Your Mind: A Practical Guide

This is the post I wish had existed when I first started trying to navigate reward flight booking. Because while the concept of flying for almost nothing is genuinely straightforward, the actual process of finding available seats, understanding your options, and not making expensive mistakes takes a bit of learning. Consider this your shortcut.

Always Book a Reward Flight, Never Use Avios to Discount a Normal Ticket

When you use Avios to reduce the price of a standard cash ticket you are getting a fraction of the value compared to booking a dedicated reward flight. The reward flight section is where your points stretch furthest. Always start there.

How to Actually Find Reward Availability

Go to the British Airways website and look for the option to search using Avios or reward seats. Log into your Executive Club account. From there search your route and the results will show which flights have reward availability and what they cost in Avios and cash taxes combined. Reward seats are limited in number on each flight. Try different dates. Try flying midweek. Try departing a day earlier or later. The availability is there, it just requires flexibility to find it. You can also choose between paying purely in Avios or a mix of Avios and cash. Generally paying purely in Avios gives better value.

Use the Avios App and Shopping Portal to Build Points Faster

The fastest way to build your balance without flying constantly is through the Avios shopping portal. Download the app, click through to any online retailer via the portal before you shop, and you earn Avios on everything you buy. Points also transfer in from American Express Membership Rewards at a one to one rate and from Nectar at a conversion rate worth checking on the Avios website.

The Friend Booking Hack

When travelling with a group, offer to book everyone's flights and have them transfer you the money. You collect all the Avios from the booking at no extra cost to anyone. On a group of four or five people this can add thousands of Avios to your balance from a single trip.

Know Your Companion Voucher Rules

If you have an Amex companion voucher, you cannot use it on a cash booking. You need to find two reward seats on the same flight. Book as far in advance as possible when using a companion voucher to give yourself the best chance of finding availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I never find reward flight availability?

Reward seats are limited on each flight and popular routes on peak dates sell out quickly. Try flexible dates, midweek departures, and check back regularly as availability can change.

Can I transfer Nectar points to Avios?

Yes, Nectar points convert to Avios. The conversion rate and terms are detailed on both the Nectar and Avios websites.

How do I join British Airways Executive Club?

Membership is free and you can sign up on the British Airways website.
